2008 LL Waters - Year in Review Patrice Stalvig
2008 L. L. Waters Recipient
A Year in Review
Since receiving the L. L. Waters Scholarship in 2008, I have been able to expand my horizons and broaden my knowledge and awareness of the Transportation and Logistics field. My journey began with sponsorship by the American Society of Transportation & Logistics and the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) for me to attend the Intermodal Association of North America’s (IANA) Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in November of 2008, where I received my scholarship check. At the Conference, I was exposed to seminars, expos, meetings, and many professionals from all walks of the intermodal industry. Some of the knowledge I gained was immediately put to use for class projects and presentations, other knowledge helped me gain a better understanding of all the pieces of the supply chain puzzle. That information has been invaluable to me as I continue my internship with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority and move on toward graduation in December.
I immediately updated my resume, and believe that being the recipient of the L. L. Waters Scholarship played a role in my being chosen for other opportunities as well. I was selected as a scholarship recipient by The Logistics Council of the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area and also received a scholarship from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) - Northeastern Wisconsin Roundtable to attend the Annual CSCMP Global Conference in Chicago this fall. A separate, but unique opportunity was also presented to me, and I found myself in front of the camera filming a commercial for the Transportation & Logistics Management Major at UWS. I was a little apprehensive at first, but it was a great experience and I still enjoy the occasional local viewer who recognizes me from the commercial.
I am convinced that the L. L. Waters Scholarship and events like the IANA Conference are beneficial to students on many levels. So much so, that while serving as Treasurer of the UWS Transportation & Logistics Club, I was instrumental in securing funding that will allow several UWS Transportation students to attend the IANA Conference in California this fall. I’m sure they will take advantage of all the Conference has to offer, and come back with plenty of knowledge to share.
It’s truly been an amazing year! I’m grateful to the scholarship committee and all who support the scholarship, and I wish the next recipient of the L. L. Waters Scholarship much success.
