L.L. Waters Scholarship Program
The L.L. Waters Scholarship Program was established to encourage advanced undergraduate study and graduate study in the field of Transportation/Logistics/Physical Distribution, for the purpose of preparing persons of high potential for professional careers in the field. The Scholarship has been named in honor of Dr. L.L. Waters, University Professor Emeritus of Transportation and Business History in Indiana University's School of Business, in recognition of his many contributions to undergraduate and graduate level education in transportation and logistics during a teaching career of more than three decades.
L.L. Waters Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,000. Each recipient of the scholarship is accorded the designation "L.L. Waters Scholar." The winner is determined by the Trustees of the L.L. Waters Scholarship Fund. Click here to view the announcement of the 2012 L.L. Waters Scholar.

Students enrolled in, or accepted to, a fully accredited college or university in the pursuit of graduate studies in transportation/logistics/physical distribution as their concentration of study, are also eligible. Recipients are selected without regard to race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Awards will be on a competitive basis, based upon scholastic performance and potential, and evidence of the degree of commitment to the pursuit of a professional career in transportation/logistics.
Submission and Processing Dates for 2013
Final due date for submission of applications (including all supporting documents) provides prospective applicants and faculty nominators with time for preparation of applications amidst a crowded calendar of competing demands for time (e.g., on-campus career fairs). Notification of scholarship winner on Monday, October 8, should accommodate later submission date while giving school, educator nominator, and student scholarship recipient a lead time of approximately one and one-half weeks to respond/plan/communicate on option for travel to receive scholarship award in person at AST&L Annual Meeting circa late October.
Scholarship Board members have discussed the possibility that the Board select the scholarship winner before close of spring semester classes and final examinations. It was their unanimous conclusion that a decision at this point in time would not be workable, for two reasons:
First, final course grade information for applicants’ spring semester work is needed but not available until most students have left campus for the summer. Grade data on course work within the transport/logistics/supply chain management field plays an important role in the Scholarship Board’s judgment of applicants. However, most applicants enrolled in undergraduate programs will have just completed their junior year of study, and the junior year is the time within which they typically obtain their first extensive work in courses within the transport/logistics/supply chain management field. Applicants enrolled in graduate programs quite often do not complete much if any work in their field of concentration until the second semester of their first year of study.
Second, faculty members’ availability of time for assisting students on tasks such as scholarship application is constrained by grading work and other urgent tasks during the period immediately preceding and following spring semester class ending dates.
Students who wish to apply for the L.L. Waters Scholarship must do so by submitting a completed application form to the Scholarship Judging Panel, American Society of Transportation and Logistics, Inc., PO Box 3363, Warrenton, VA 20188. This form must be accompanied by an official transcript. Letters of recommendation must be received separately from two faculty members in the applicant's school who have major teaching and research commitments in transportation/logistics/supply chain management. All applications and supporting documents are due by Thursday, September 26, 2013. Please call 202-580-7270 ext. 3 with questions.
A panel of judges, nominated by the L.L. Waters Scholarship Trustees, will evaluate applications for the scholarship, and select recipients.
Announcement and Distribution of Awards
Recipients will be notified of their selection on October 7, 2013. Awards will be paid towards the Winter 2013 semester or quarter. Payments will be made directly to the student to be used exclusively for tuition/books or direct college expenses.
